Irish Dictionary

In Ireland, a lot of the things we say mean something else outside of the country, or the word just doesn't exist at all. Here's a guide to most of the common phrases:

Out on the lash - out drinking
Jammers - packed full
Lash - rain
Mortified - Very embarrassed
Grand - Fine
Story? - Hi
Your Man/Woman - Used in conversation when referring to someone
I will ye - I won't
The Jacks - the toilets
Gas - funny
Muppet - fool
Craic - Good Fun
Knackered - exhausted
Batter ya - Beat up
Locked - drunk
In tatters - destroyed
Spuds - potatoes
Deadly - really cool
Bleedin' deadly - really really cool
Yoke - thing
Fierce - very
Work away - Continue what you were doing
Like - Used at the end of every sentence
Sketch - running away from authority
Lads - boys/guys
Spanner - Idiot
Savage - very good or very bad
Sound - good, reliable
Tool - idiot
Brutal - Terrible, Awful
Desperate - Terrible
Banjaxed - Broken
Chancer - Person who tries to get away with something cheeky
Bang on - Exactly
Effin' and Blindin' - swearing
Fair play - well done
Sucking diesel - understanding a problem, get the hang of something
Kip - dump
Scarlet - embarrassed
Cop on - Get a hold of yourself
