It is difficult to estimate exactly how many Irish-born people are currently living abroad. But, according to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), roughly 1 in 6 Irish-born people are currently living abroad. The map to the right shows an estimate of the number of Irish-born living in different countries around the world. It is clear to see that the UK is the main destination for Irish emigrants, followed by the US and then Australia. A lack of jobs and opportunities in recent years has really pushed Irish people from Ireland to these places. In the USA, there are roughly 34.5 million people who claim Irish heritage. This Irish the second most common ancestry in the US, after German. Many of these people would be descendants of Irish immigrants who came to America during and after the Great Famine in the 1840s in Ireland. The potato blight left 1 million Irish dead. Another million emigrated to countries such as America, the UK and Canada
