But, according to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), roughly 1 in 6 Irish-born people are currently living abroad. The map to the right shows an estimate of the number of Irish-born living in different countries around the world. It is clear to see that the UK is the main destination for Irish emigrants, followed by the US and then Australia. A lack of jobs and opportunities in recent years has really pushed Irish people from Ireland to these places. In the USA, there are roughly 34.5 million people who claim Irish heritage. Where Did We Come From

They arrived along Ireland's east and north eastern coast about 9000 years ago, and settled beside the River Bann. They came from Britain across narrow strips of land called land bridges. (The locations of possible land bridges are shown to the right). This was only possible after the last Ice Age when sea levels were a lot lower than they are now. We obviously can't see these strips of land today as the ice has melted and sea levels have risen, covering the land. Mount Sandel was the perfect place for these early settlers to live as it provided them with all the things they needed in their daily lives; food, water, defence and communications.
